CHURCH DECORUM - The next few months, published in the bulletin will be the DO’s and DON’T’s when we prepare ourselves to attend Church and when we attend Church.
Sunday’s Quorbono might start at 10 AM, but preparing for the Offering starts much sooner. As a priest, it begins the night before or even all week long as he prepares his homily for the Liturgy. But as parishioners, it should start on the car ride to the Church. Talking about or getting your mind wrapped about what is going to happen and WHO you are going to experience / be in the presence of (Jesus.) We start every week at 5 minutes before Liturgy to perform the ritual of the Lighting of the Church. But it doesn’t end after the Offering is complete. You need to stay for the final blessing. And you need to be the first formators/teachers of the Church. We need to pass our faith onto our families and those around this. Later in the day, when you sit down to dine with your beloved, this is the time to discuss the readings and the priest’s homily. Being a Christian doesn’t just suffice for one hour (or less than that) for us. It is an ongoing learning process. I might be missing something, but know I have all of our best interests in mind. Let us pray for one and another. Rev. Alex Joseph
This is the home of our Lord. Please treat it as such for you and others that come after you. Thank you.

APPOINTMENT OF A NEW PASTORAL ADVISORY COUNCIL IN FEBRUARY
A new pastoral advisory council, along with a three member finance committee will be appointed and installed by the second week in February.
In accordance with the new Statutes of the Eparchy of St. Maron of Brooklyn, promulgated on October 8, 2019, “The members of the Pastoral Council are to be appointed, elected, or a combination of both, to be decided by the pastor, for a determined period of time.” (Eparchial Statutes, Statutes 222.)

Active parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy, in good standing, and willing to serve on the councils, and on different committees, at different aspects of the Church life, are kindly asked to submit their names to Abouna Alex directly by February 1st, 2020.
Please see below the full text of the new bylaws and statutes pertaining to the Advisory Council.
Pastoral Council
Statue 219. Every parish must have a Pastoral Council whose role is to cooperate with the pastor in all aspects of pastoral life of the parish. It is to advise the pastor on pastoral matters, but it is not in any way to be construed as a decision-making body.
Statute 220. Ideally the Pastoral Council should be distinct from the Finance Council. In cases where two distinct councils cannot be formed due to a lack of numbers, a combined council is acceptable.
Statute 221. The Pastoral Council is to be limited to the laity, and is to be comprised of no less than 6 and no more than 12 members, not including the pastor.
Statute 222. The members of the Pastoral Council are to be appointed, elected, or a combination of both, to be decided by the pastor, for a determined period of time. The pastor may remove a member of the Pastoral Council for a serious reason, after consultation with the Eparchial Bishop.
Statute 223. The pastor may invite his parochial vicar, deacons, or subdeacons to attend any or all meetings however they are not considered members of the Pastoral Council.
Statute 224. All members of the Pastoral Council must maintain the confidentiality of the deliberations of the Council, especially with respect to privacy and personal reputations.
Statute 225. Meetings of the Pastoral Council are to be held in parish facilities and meetings are to take place at least once every three months.
Statute 226. It is the competence of the pastor alone to call meetings of the Pastoral Council and set its agenda.

Have a great week.
Peace be with you, Abouna Alex
